{"id":11185,"date":"2020-07-29T12:49:23","date_gmt":"2020-07-29T10:49:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/?p=7806"},"modified":"2026-03-11T16:50:52","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T15:50:52","slug":"portofino-beaches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/en\/blog\/portofino-beaches\/","title":{"rendered":"Portofino Beaches, 3 corners of Paradise: our tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portofino\u2019s beaches are <\/span><b>three pearls <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set between the intense blue of the Ligurian Sea and the lush greenery of the Portofino Park: <\/span><b>Niasca, Cannon Bay <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> Olivetta.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The beaches of Portofino are springboards that will propel you towards an incredible journey, exploring the Portofino Protected Marine Area. <\/span><b>Biodiversity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reigns supreme, the <\/span><b>panorama<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leaves even the most seasoned explorer speechless\u2026so roll up, roll up! Your voyage is about to begin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We follow the Eastern side of the Portofino Promontory (between Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino) from North to South. Here are the <\/span><b>3 tiny but gorgeous Portofino beaches<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (all three are public beaches):<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>1. Portofino beaches: Niasca<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside <\/span><b>Paraggi Bay<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/en\/blog\/portofino-italy-virtual-tour\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(click here to find out more)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, facing the famous medieval castle, is Niasca beach, a strip of sand well protected from the waves. Thanks its favourable exposition, vegetation grows all the way down to the beach, almost grazing the waters. Away from the beach, the rocky coastline that starts off towards the North is home to thousands of plant and animal species, creating one of the <\/span><b>most interesting habitats of the Portofino Protected Marine Area<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Around 300 m after the built up part of Paraggi (travelling towards Portofino), the road narrows and curves to the left beside a villa. The beach is below and there is scooter parking (and bike parking) a few metres beyond, together with the bus stop (bus n\u00b082 \u2013 route Santa Portofino). From here the steps start that will take you down to the sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of this article you will find all the necessary info, together with our tips, on how to reach the area.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>Niasca, the Outdoor homeland! Here is what you can do here:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of my heart lives in Niasca. Here there is our watersports centre, this is where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/it\/mission\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our project began <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2012. From the beach you can set off with a mask, flippers and snorkel for one of the most exhilarating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/it\/tour\/snorkeling\/snorkeling-tour\/\"><b>underwater explorations<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> possible. You can paddle (on board a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/en\/?attachment_id=17377\"><b>Kayak<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/sup\/\"><b>SUP<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) towards the Lighthouse, or even go as far as San Fruttuoso. You can learn things here (whether you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/it\/?post_type=tour&amp;s=corso&amp;tour_destination%5B0%5D=124&amp;tour_categories%5B0%5D=27&amp;tour_categories%5B1%5D=31&amp;order_by=name&amp;order=ASC\"><b>are big <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/it\/tour\/bambini-e-ragazzi\/scuola-natura\/\"><b>small<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). You can enjoy a fine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/it\/tour\/kayak\/portofino-sunset-kayak-wine-tour\/\"><b>glass of wine at sundown, after a canoe outing<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You can swim safely (the entire bay of Paraggi is delimited by a contact cable &#8211; no vessels may enter here).<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>2. Portofino beaches: Cannon Bay<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A pebbly beach, with a vast and picturesque mass of Conglomerate rock (locally known as Puddinga) with a maritime pine perched on its crest, clean waters and an incredible view over Portofino Castle &#8211; this is the beach at Cannon Bay.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7772\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7772\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7772\" src=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200724_121307-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"Baia Cannone\" width=\"900\" height=\"438\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7772\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arriving at Cannon Bay whilst <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/en\/tour\/coasteering-niasca-portofino-eng\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coasteering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a unique emotion!<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><b>Accessing Cannon Bay beach:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having gone past Niasca, continue along the road towards Portofino. Once you reach the Piccolo Hotel (clearly visible from the road, on the mountain side) the road bends to the left. Straight afterwards, still on the left, there is a little sign and an iron staircase that leads you down to the sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>3. Portofino beaches: Olivetta<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olivetta is sadly infamous, owing to the fact that in December 1944 German soldiers massacred 21 partisans and a civilian in its shallows, probably as retaliation. For this reason, the famous square in Portofino is named \u201cPiazza Martiri dell\u2019Olivetta\u201d, the Olivetta martyrs. On the left hand side of the bay you can still note the <\/span><b>commemorative plaque <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a list of the names of the fallen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately it is also well-known for its <\/span><b>extraordinary sea bed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s not a beach to lie down on, sunbathe or play beach tennis. The minuscule beaches of Niasca and Cannon Bay are huge expanses compared to here! At the same time, it is the best starting point for an underwater exploration towards the Lighthouse or an enjoyable pause during a trek or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/en\/tour\/kayak-eng\/portofino-full-day-sea-kayak-tour-eng\/\"><b>paddle towards Zone B of the Protected Marine Area<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7771\" src=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/IMG_0904-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Faro Portofino\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The path connecting Portofino with the Lighthouse and Olivetta beach<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Accessing Olivetta beach:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olivetta beach can be reached only <\/span><b>on foot<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>from the sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>on foot<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the path connecting San Giorgio church (Portofino) to the Lighthouse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>from the sea<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/it\/noleggio\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">renting <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a Kayak or SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) from our watersports centre, or by taking part in one of our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/it\/tour\/kayak\/portofino-kayak-tour\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tour<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Portofino beaches: how to reach them<\/h1>\n<h3><b>By bike<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without a doubt a bike is the best means of transport for getting here! The ideal thing is to reach Santa Margherita Ligure by train (yes, you can take your bike on the train<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and then enjoy a gorgeous panoramic 4 km cycle on the level as far as Niasca (or Portofino). Don\u2019t have a bike? There is another paying car park in Portofino (more indicated if you are intending to reach Cannon Bay or Olivetta).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>These indications are also valid for reaching Portofino. Niasca and Paraggi beach are about 200m apart and are less than 1km from Portofino.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>By ferry<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sea route to Portofino runs from the main towns of the Golfo del Tigullio, Golfo Paradiso and from Genoa. The main operators are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfoparadiso.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golfo Paradiso<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (for reaching Portofino by sea from: Camogli, Recco, Nervi and Genoa)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/traghettiportofino.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Servizio Marittimo del Tigullio <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(for reaching Portofino by sea from: Santa Margherita, Rapallo, Chiavari)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Advice for enjoying the beaches sustainably and respectfully<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you have all of the information needed to enjoy this infinite beauty of a spot, don\u2019t forget:<\/span><b> this heritage has to be respected and protected<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some simple <\/span><b>advice<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>DO NOT <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leave your <\/span><b>rubbish <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the wild; if you find refuse, collect it\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>DO NOT<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> touch or <\/span><b>interfere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the fauna and flora (this includes jellyfish!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>DO NOT<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> take sand, pebbles or shells away with you<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>LEARN, and ask<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!
