A tiny, <strong>picturesque fishing hamlet<\/strong>, it is reachable only by <strong>sea<\/strong> or by hiking along the steep <strong>trails<\/strong> of the \u201cMount\u201d. There are a scattering of houses, a 10th century Abbey, a Medieval tower erected to defend both the village and its water source, and an underwater statue (<strong>the Christ of the Abyss<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Here time seems to have stood still, life slowly flows by, only disturbed by the day-trippers in the summer. <strong>Nature and history blend into a unique landscape<\/strong>, with the scent of the Mediterranean scrub and the incessant song of the cicadas completing the setting. Mother Nature truly outdid herself here!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7841\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7841\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7841 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/k37549865230_4c6900ff8a_o-1024x685.jpg\" alt=\"San Fruttuoso by the sea kayaking\" width=\"900\" height=\"602\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7841\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The best means of reaching San Fruttuoso: by kayak!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>If you want to experience the real San Fruttuoso, you will need to earn it by the sweat of your brow, which will be repaid with both wonder and marvel, read on here:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1>San Fruttuoso: where is it?<\/h1>\n<p>San Fruttuoso di Camogli is in <strong>Liguria<\/strong>, on the Eastern riviera, located in the municipality of <strong>Camogli<\/strong>. It is at the heart of the <strong>Park and Protected Marine Area of Portofino<\/strong>. Located around 30 km East of <strong>Genoa<\/strong>, it is 3 nautical miles West of <a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/en\/portofino-eng\/\"><strong>Portofino<\/strong><\/a> and around 4 nautical miles East of Camogli itself.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/en\/blog\/portofino-italy-virtual-tour\/\">Here you can find more info about the area.<\/a><\/p>\n<h1><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-7837\" src=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/OP_mappa_2020_05_page-0001-1024x941.jpg\" alt=\"San Fruttuoso mappa\" width=\"900\" height=\"827\" \/>San Fruttuoso: how and when to go<\/h1>\n<p>Exactly because of its extreme beauty and owing to its reduced dimensions (to say the least), San Fruttuoso di Camogli <strong>fills up easily<\/strong>. A romantic and bucolic experience can easily be transformed into a conventional and unauthentic visit.<\/p>\n<p>Here are <strong>my 2 (+1) solutions<\/strong> to avoid this happening and to enjoy the <strong>best<\/strong> experience possible:<\/p>\n<h3>1 \u2013 Summer in San Fruttuoso: by Kayak + staying the night<\/h3>\n<p>In the summer the best idea is to plan to arrive at around 5pm (when the last ferries leave, effectively emptying the hamlet). This is my <strong>perfect program<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Departure from Paraggi<\/strong> (Niasca) in the early afternoon<\/li>\n<li><strong>Navigation by kayak<\/strong> for around 3 nautical (almost 6 km, around a 1 hour paddle in all). Swimming and snorkeling break along the way at the Cala degli Inglesi.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Arrival at the Christ of the Abyss statue<\/strong> (more on that below), snorkeling a must!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Landing<\/strong> at San Fruttuoso when there is almost no one else left there. Relaxation and tranquillity!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hike<\/strong> up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/agririfugiomolini.it\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Agririfugio Molini<\/a> (about 30 min, 200 m altitude difference), an incredible place. Hospitality right in the heart of the Park, <strong>overlooking the Bay<\/strong>, with <strong>typical Ligurian cooking<\/strong>, <strong>silence<\/strong> and a complete break with civilization\u2026.<\/li>\n<li>The day after, having a swim <strong>before the first ferries disembark the hordes of tourists<\/strong> and the beach is still deserted. Attention though in the Spring (especially Easter and in May): it is full of school trips and groups.<\/p>\n<p>In this period, <strong>my perfect program\u00a0is<\/strong>: reach San Fruttuoso in <a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/en\/kayak-eng\/\">Kayak<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/en\/sup-eng\/\">Sup<\/a> (Stand Up Paddle Board) departing in the morning with a picnic and returning in the early afternoon (<a href=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/en\/tour\/kayak-eng\/portofino-full-day-sea-kayak-tour-eng\/\">further info here<\/a>). Be smart and remember: <strong>Liguria is fantastic all year round<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>In this period the <strong>hiking option<\/strong> isn\u2019t bad either (+ ferry, if you like), starting off from Camogli, Portofino Vetta or Santa Margherita. <a href=\"https:\/\/portofinotrek.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Here<\/a> you can find all of the itineraries and trails through the Park which you can take to reach San Fruttuoso on foot.<\/p>\n<h1>The Christ of the Abyss: a submerged statue<\/h1>\n<p>One of the main attractions of San Fruttuoso is the Christ of the Abyss. A <strong>bronze statue<\/strong> representing Christ with his arms reaching up to the heavens, \u201cthe Christ\u201d is located at a <strong>depth of around 15 meters<\/strong>, on the Eastern coast of the Bay, at around <strong>300 meters from the main beach<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7838\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7838\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7838 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/001-7-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Cristo degli Abissi\" width=\"900\" height=\"599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/001-7-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/001-7-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/001-7-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/001-7-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/outdoorportofino.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/001-7.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7838\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Christ of the Abyss<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>The Christ of the Abyss: how can I see it?<\/h3>\n<p>As written above, my favorite way is to reach it by kayak or Sup from Niasca and <strong>dive in with a mask and snorkel<\/strong> (and perhaps a wetsuit, depending on the season).<\/p>\n<p>For those who would like to arrive directly from San Fruttuoso, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bagnisanfruttuoso.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">rent a mask here<\/a> and arrive by swimming over from the beach.
